Sunday Scenic Cycling

We’ve both really missed getting out and about on the bicycles since Andy suffered a heart attack in May. Keen to ease ourselves back into it gently, we chose an easy first ride, visiting one of our favourite cycling haunts in the Borders, our former village, the small hamlet of Newmill, 5 miles south of Hawick.

Its practically a flat run from Newmill to Southfield, a few small inclines to get the blood pumping while taking in some incredible, picturesque views. The path which runs along the Allan water, is in good condition, traffic is usually minimal. You may pass the odd dog walker or the farmer tending to his livestock.

Half way we stop and enjoy the peace and tranquility at the side of the river. A favourite spot for meditation and mindful contemplation.

The route which is ideal for beginners is around 5 miles start to finish (Newmill to Southfield & back).

Alternatively there is the option of the longer route if you are feeling fit enough to tackle the steep hill at Southfield, taking a left turn at the top and heading up over the rolling countryside, passing Acre-knowe Reservoir before dropping down into the Weensland Road end of Hawick.

The trip from Newmill over to Hawick is absolutely stunning, covering approximately 12 miles and taking in some pretty steep climbs. Undoubtedly easy for the keen experienced cyclist but you’ll certainly feel it if you are out of practice or if you are a beginner.
